There is much more talk nowadays about regulating your nervous system. And there are various exercises and breathing methods you can use to help you to do this.

I’m really pleased to see that this is becoming more mainstream. More people are aware of trauma and its effect on our lives. And see the need to do something about this.

We also understand much better how trauma is held in our body and nervous system, so it makes sense to bring this into the healing process.

And this is a wonderful thing.

And I believe that to really shift anxiety, we need to deal with the unresolved emotions that are feeding it.

Those emotions that we were not able to deal with at the time – often because we were too young and didn’t get the support we needed.

We suppressed these emotions, pushed them away and now are not aware that they are still there.

This is where anxiety comes in. Those unresolved emotions are there and they are stirring in the background – and make us feel anxious, but we don’t know why.

And anxiety will just latch itself onto anything that isn’t working in our lives, as it is not locational.

Breathing and other exercises to calm our nervous system are great for the short term.

But to shift anxiety longer term we need to work with the emotions that are still there.
